South Bronx United succeeds because of its staff of over 100 volunteers dedicated to working with youth through education and soccer in the South Bronx community. We are always looking for individuals interested and dedicated to serving South Bronx youth. If you would like to join our staff, please contact us.

1. YOUTH TUTOR

Dates: October 2010 – June 2011
Location: Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports, Mott Haven High School Campus
730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY 10451

Scope of Work
Youth tutors promote academic achievement by assisting students with their homework, helping them improve competency in literacy and mathematics, promoting independent study skills, and regularly reviewing student progress. Youth tutors may also coordinate small group or individual activities designed to support the development of literacy and educational achievement. Youth tutors may also work with some students to promote English language learning or with high school students to prepare for state regents tests and SAT tests.

Essential Position Functions
- Assist youth with homework, projects, and test preparation.
- Facilitate or participate in cultural and academic enrichment activities and college awareness/preparation activities.
- Aid in behavior management that promotes policies and practices necessary to create a productive learning environment.
- Work and communicate consistently with South Bronx United staff, volunteers, and site personnel as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Reliable and flexible
- Participate in South Bronx United Youth Program Orientation and Trainings.
- Willing to learn about and work with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to adhere to volunteer and workplace policies
- Experience & commitment to working with youth, esp. middle & high school age.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effective in English; additional fluency in Spanish, French, or Twi is a plus.

Times and Commitment
- Monday through Friday, 3:30pm - 6pm
- Commitment of at least one afternoon per week.

2. RECREATIONAL SOCCER COACH

Dates: Fall Season: September 11 – December 4, 2010. Spring Season: March – June, 2011
Location: Macombs Dam Field, 161st Street, across from Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY 10451

Scope of Work
The South Bronx United Recreational Program serves 350 children ages 4-19. Recreational Soccer Coaches work with a team of 8-14 children in a desired age group (U6 Coed, U8 Coed, U10 Coed, U14 Boys, HS Boys, MS/HS Girls). Coaches assist with full group training lessons and then coach their team in games. Many teams have co-coaches or assistant coaches.

Essential Position Functions
- Positively encourage and coach children during lessons and games
- Assist or lead age group or team training lessons.
- Support our philosophy of (1) Fun Soccer, (2) Everyone Plays/Equal playing time, (3) Balanced Teams, (4) Positive Coaching Sportsmanship, (5) Player Development through small-sided games.
- Communicate with players and parents regarding any game changes or special events.
- Help maintain a safe, structured, and positive environment for all children.
- Work consistently with South Bronx United staff, volunteers, and site personnel as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Reliable and flexible (arrive at least 10 minutes prior to start time)
- Participate in South Bronx United Coach Trainings and educate oneself about coaching.
- Willing to learn about and work with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to adhere to volunteer and workplace policies
- Experience & commitment to working with children and youth.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effective in English; additional fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Times: Saturdays. 1-2 hours. Time depending on assigned age group, between 9am – 2pm.

3. RECREATIONAL SOCCER REFEREE

Dates: Fall Season: September 11 – December 4, 2010. Spring Season: March – June, 2011

- Reliable and flexible (arrive weekly for scheduled time period)
- Willing to learn about and work with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to adhere to volunteer and workplace policies
- Experience & commitment to working with children and youth.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effective in English; additional fluency in Spanish is a big plus.

Times: Saturdays. 2 hours minimum, between 9am – 2pm.

5. ASSISTANT COORDINATOR - TRAVEL PROGRAM

Dates: Fall Season: September – December, 2010. Spring Season: February – June, 2011
Location: Various

Scope of Work
The South Bronx United Recreational Program serves 350 children ages 4-19 and is entirely volunteer run. We need individuals to help coordinate activities, schedules, training, games, and operations every Saturday, as well as to help coordinate special events including Health Day, Literacy Day, and Photo Day.

Essential Position Functions
- Assist and communicate with coordinator.
- Ensure the field is appropriate set up for games.
- Communicate with parents and children.
- Organize, plan, and operate special events.
- Help maintain a safe and structured playing environment.

Requirements
- Know the basic rules of soccer, as appropriate to different age levels.
- Attend and assist with at least one team practice each week.
- Manage and assist with most weekend games.
- Participate in South Bronx United Travel Program events, activities, and orientations.
- Willing to learn about and work with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to adhere to volunteer and workplace policies
- Experience & commitment to working with youth.
Ability to communicate clearly and effective in English; additional fluency in Spanish, French, and Twi is a plus.

Times:
- Practices vary, generally Tuesday and Thursday.
- Games times on Saturdays or Sundays, but vary by team and age group
- Minimum commitment of 4-6 hours per week.

5. ASSISTANT SOCCER COACH – TRAVEL PROGRAM

Dates: Fall Season: September – December, 2010. Spring Season: February – June, 2011
Location: Various

Scope of Work
SBU has 100 players on five boys travel teams (U11, U13, U15, U17, U19) that play year-round in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League, affiliates of US Youth Soccer. The program gives players the opportunity to travel outside their neighborhoods throughout New York City and beyond. Coaches serve as mentors and role models for the players in addition to helping youth develop technical and tactical skills on the field. Travel teams practice at least twice a week and have games most weekends. Assistant coaches assist with at least one practice a week and most games, also aiding with transportation to and management of games.

Essential Position Functions
- Assist and communicate with head coach during practices and games.
- Positively encourage and teach children during practices and games
- Promote character development, including leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Help maintain a safe and structured playing environment.
- Coordinate with players and families by phone for practices and games as needed.
- Help coordinate transportation to games and events.
