SBU Literacy Day Returns with 9th Annual Event

On Saturday, May 22nd, South Bronx United returned with its annual Literacy Day after 2020’s event was cancelled last spring due to COVID-19. All participants in the Recreational Soccer Program Macombs Dam Park, Mullaly Park, and Patterson Park between the ages of 4-14 joined soccer-themed reading circles and received a brand new book and SBU bookmark to take home. Special thanks to authors and book donors AJ Reisman, author of Build Higher; Andrea Montalbano, author of the Soccer Sisters series; and Sleeping Bear Press, publishers of Little Soccer. In all more than 500 books were given out, all soccer-themed titles including books about Pele, Mia Hamm, and the youth soccer team that was trapped in a cave in Thailand. Previously, in addition to reading circles, SBU has distributed more than 2,000 books each year through a free book fair held at each program site. While the free book fair was to held this year due to health concerns, SBU is looking forward to bringing the full event back in 2022.
