College Admission Exams: SAT & ACT

The SAT and ACT are exams that most colleges use to assess the merits of their applicants. All SBU students applying to college should take at least one of these two college admissions exams.

SAT: Scholastic Assessment Test
The SAT is the most widely used college admissions exam. It contains 3 sections: reading, writing, and math. All SBU student athletes should take the exam in Spring of their Junior year and again in Fall of their Senior year.

  • Registering: Students need to register a least a month in advance of the desired testing date. The sooner a student registers the more options he/she will have for a convenient testing location.
  • Fee Waivers: Many students qualify to take the test twice for free. Fee waivers are provided by your high school guidance counselor.

    ACT
The ACT is another college admissions test widely accepted by colleges. The ACT is more of an achievement test than the SAT, testing what you have learned in school. It contains 5 subject areas: math, science, english, reading, writing. For those who do not test well on the SAT, the ACT may be a good option.

  • Registering: Students need to register approximately a month in advance of the desired testing date.
  • Fee Waivers: Many students qualify to take the test twice for free. Fee waivers are provided by your high school guidance counselor.
