Education

The objectives of the Education Through Soccer component of South Bronx United are
(1) to help youth achieve academic success and graduate high school,
(2) to prepare youth for college and careers, and
(3) to ensure all youth attend college.

Because sixty percent of youth in the South Bronx United Travel Program were born outside of the United States, the education programs also aim to help youth improve English language competency. Youth in the travel program are required to participate in education programming. Staff and coaches collect report cards and transcripts of students and regularly check up on student’s academic progress.

Additional Activities:

Secondary School Placement
South Bronx United assists with secondary school placement and career preparedness. Staff has helped place students in secondary schools depending on their unique needs and situations, including the Manhattan Country School and English Language Learners and International Support (ELLIS) Preparatory Academy.

Career Preparedness
South Bronx United strives to prepare youth for future careers. Career Preparation activities include providing opportunities for youth to intern and complete community service, participation in career days, and job and internship placement when possible. In the summer of 2010, South Bronx United place nine students in paid internships at the EdLab at Columbia University Teacher College. Read blogs written during their summer here:
