Volunteer Referee

OVERVIEW
Volunteers referee matches for players within our Global Youth League, a recreational soccer program geared towards providing high school age immigrant youth (including unaccompanied immigrant teens) and youth from immigrant families the opportunity to make friends, build community, and compete in the sport they love. College prep programming is also offered to youth participating on the field.

WHEN
Saturday afternoons: 1:00-4:30 pm
Referees volunteer at least one 1.5-2 hour slot.
Fall: September-November
Spring: March-June

WHERE
Foster Park (Formerly Mullaly): Jerome Avenue at 165th Street. Park is North of Yankee Stadium.

COMMITMENT
• Referees must be able to commit to being present for at least 1.5-2 hours every Saturday (excluding certain holiday weekends) during the season
• One season commitment minimum

QUALIFICATIONS
Prior refereeing experience is not necessary; however, strong knowledge of the game and enthusiasm for working with children is essential.

TRAINING & SUPPORT
We will provide volunteers with orientation materials, referee training, and a referee manual. A formal orientation/ training will be held prior to each season. Referees will be assigned to age groups (age 4-19) based on experience, availability, and preference. An SBU coordinator will always be on site to provide support and guidance.

BENEFITS
In addition to helping provide the resources and support to allow under-resourced youth the opportunity to participate in an organized sport, coaches will have opportunities for professional coaching trainings and will be connected to a network of caring volunteers for fun soccer-related events throughout the year.
